What medicine can help with my agoraphobia?
I have a self-diagnosed case of agoraphobia, self-diagnosed because my symptoms are very similar to agoraphobia.
My question is to anyone who may have it. I am not sure if there are any, but what OTC medicines will help with the symptoms? I want to go to the doctor, but I would rather see if I can get some easy help before I go that route.
For those who do not know, agoraphobia is when a person can get very scared and panicky when placed in an unfamiliar place or when placed in large crowds.

Well there aren’t any over the counter anti-anxiety medications on the market. Well there maybe but they are probably homeopathic medicine (which for obvious reasons won’t work) So until you go and see an actual physician so he/she may make a actual medical diagnosis, you aren’t going to get any real results from OTC. Therapy may be more helpful the self medicating.

Oh yeah I totally understand how you feel. I had it really bad for awhile. I still get it but ive learned to manage it much much better and it is a lot easier and not as intense.I have never taken any prescribed medications for it, but i like to know I can as a back up in case I feel ive had enough and I cant do it on my own anymore. Mine started because I had high anxiety everyday and started have panic attacks. My panic attacks would happen in public places so I started to avoid going to those places. I get nervous when I go out now but I have much more confidence and am not scared. It is an ugly feeling. I started taking B complex vitamins because I read somewhere that it helps with agoraphobics. I think it definitely took the edge off for me even though I still have it somewhat. I bought this book called cognitive behavioral therapy for dummies and that helps me so much. There is also a workbook with the same title. Sometimes when I get nervous to go somewhere I do this thing I learned from the book, I write down my nervous thought and then counteract it with something logical, I do it down the list until there is nothing else negative I can think of. It helps me before I go into stores or wherever makes me nervous. For example, here is what mine usually includes lol:
I am so nervous about going into this store.
I feel like I am not strong enough.
Its all in your mind, you can do
anything you put your mind to.
I hate this though. I cant stand the way
I am feeling. Its almost unbearable.
The feeling will pass and you will
become stronger. You can do this!
There is nothing to be afraid of, its
all in your mind!
lol so see, it may seem crazy but you have to readjust your thinking. It takes a load off of me to just break down my thought pattern and then when Im finished it doesnt seem so scary. When you go places, just give your self time to calm down and do some deep breathing exercises until you feel more calm. If you keep avoiding the situations your fear of leaving the house will only grow. I know it can be so hard, but Im telling you that once you start you will be so glad because you are facing your fears and taking control and it feels so great. Definitely try the B complex vitamins though and see if they help you take the edge off.

by the way, I self-diagnosed myself too and then I finally went to a psychiatrist about it and she said the same thing. You are already taking your own initiative to find out more about the way you are feeling. Never give up because your quality of life can be so much better! I wasnt always this way and so I knew that I wanted to have my life back and you can do it too.
