What is the best way to treat bipolar disorder without prescription medications?
My huband was recently diagnosed and I read somewhere that people on prescription medication for bipolar or depression have a suicide rate three times greater than those that are not on prescription medication.

Hi Joanna Royal,
Here is an ebook I came across that talks about how to cope with bipolar disorder. It will probably be helpful for both you and your husband. Sells for only $17.00. See the link below for more details.
Good luck

I don’t know what you were reading, but it’s not accurate. Without medication and proper treatment bipolar episodes tend to increase in frequency and severity. It is caused by a chemical imbalance in the brain and the only way to successfully level that out is with prescription medication. Some medications can have adverse side effects, but that’s why they are administered under professional supervision. It can take a while to find the right medications, but once you do it makes all the difference. Do further research. Don’t just believe the first thing you read.
As for my bipolar disorder & clinical depression, after attempting suicide four years ago and taking enough pills to kill two elephants I found the best help.
I turned from atheist to a believer overnight. My faith in God gives me the strength to know He won’t give me a load I cannot bare. I now tell myself not to worry, because if I worry I am doubting Gods ability to get me through whatever brings me down.
I have also noticed that situations I put myself into tend to effect my mood. My wife is my best supporter and now realizies when my mood is changing. She steps in and lets me walk out or avoid the situation without ever speaking a word. You may be able to help more than you know. Just pay attention to him and do what you can to take a load off of him. Don’t talk to him about it just do it and only speak of it if he brings it up. It is hard for my wife to comprehend how my mood effects me in a more drastic way than it use too. Don’t ever let him see how his disorder effects you or maybe how you may not understand why he has to be "babied" by you the way he does now. Anything that may make him feel week or less of a man, husband, or father will way on his mind heavily. No wife wants a husband they have to "take care of" but, for better or worse this will make both of your lives easier in the long run.
For what it’s worth I take zoloft. He will just have to try some of the meds. and see what works best for him. Unfortunatly, it could take a couple of years to figure it out, because he will need to give them several months to get in his system and furthermore go through his ups and downs. After all this he may decide he liked the one he first tried.
Whatever he does don’t let him feel like he is a bother to the doctor if he goes back often. I have left my shrink and found that my primary care physician helps me more. Whatever he feels likes is working stick with. Encourage him to find what make him happy in a dr. and with the meds.
