Is it Possible For Agoraphobics to Have A.D.D? Yes You Can
Is it possible to have agoraphobia and A.D.D together? Yes, you can!
What is so special if an agoraphobic also suffers from A.D.D?
Sadly speaking, a lot.
There are basically three adverse consequences and they are:
1. What to treat: The anxiety or the A.D.D?
This is the first dilemma.
Nobody likes to be a pill popper and may choose to treat only one of the two maladies.
The one that scores the highest is the anxiety.
It also be noted that many agoraphobics have domineering parents who deny that they have a problem or try and minimize the severity. They may encourage only the treatment of the A.D.D which does not pose a threat to their control. Generally the existence of an anxiety disorder is simply a manifestation of the hold they have on their offspring.
I must again emphasize that nobody likes taking pills. The pills have side effects especially some for A.D.D which may increase feelings of anxiety.
2. Forgetting To Take The Medication
An agoraphobic who decides to focus strictly on anxiety may routinely forget to take his medication if he has A.D.D.
A.D.D sufferers have very poor concentration and can be very disorganized. This can interfere with the quality of care they receive.
Some anxiety medications are to be taken once a day preferably in the evenings for instance. In the event he forgets to take his medication, this may imply the sufferer misses his medication for a whole day! This intermittent usage of the drugs will reduce the efficacy.
3. The Loss of Interest
A.D.D sufferers are notorious for loosing interest in things and this can include a treatment regime.
A treatment regime for anxiety may commence with a lot of fanfare but once the drugs begins to perform wonders, he may at some point discontinue treatment thinking the medications are either unnecessary or can combat the ailment without medication.
This discontinuation of treatment is usually discouraged by the doctor. It is only once the anxiety returns with gusto that the patient recommences treatment. By then, a lot of harm will have been done.
Once the drugs again begin to improve well being or over a period of months, the same cockiness returns and the patient discontinues treatment.
One may say this attitude can be observed in many patients that do not suffer from A.D.D. The truth is that it is more pronounced in A.D.D sufferers.
Nevertheless, A.D.D sufferers can treat both ailments if they are determined and acknowledge the price they were to pay if they discontinued treatment.
