My boyfriend suffers from agoraphobia and I’m not sure how to deal with it?
I have looked up info online about agoraphobia. I just can’t find any info to help people who have an agoraphobic in their life. I care deeply for my boyfriend and I just need a better understanding of his illness so I know what to expect and how to deal with it…

Well agoraphobia is a fear of being outside or in crowded places. I think the best way to help him is to support him and be patient and understanding. It is very difficult to feel out of control or feel like you will be having an anxiety attack and everyone will know about it…He is afraid of the unknown and of what has not happened yet and nothing you do I am afraid is going to help him with that…
He can take medication to assist with this so make sure he is seeing a doctor and he is taking his prescribed medication.
Loving someone with mental illness is really hard and you are a special person. There aren’t any quick cures but there are things that will benefit him…
What can you do…if you are with him while he is having an anxiety attack help him with his breathing techniques…something he will learn from his doctor and make sure he takes his medication.
I’d go talk to a professional, They’d be able to tell you how to help him.
good luck

Agoraphobia is best defined as a cluster of fears centering around public places and can be best understood as the fear of having a panic attack in public places. Good news for your BF it is very treatable and when he finds the right therapy (there are several types) he will get over it. For help understanding it find a n abnormal psychology textbook large public librararies and any college/university library have them or if you are willing to shell out 80-150 dollars you can buy one online. Is your bf seeing a psychologist at all if so they should be able to give you a ton of information if not make an appointment for him and . In order to get him out of the house gradually persuade him to go a little farther out of the house each day even just opening the door and standing there can be a good start. If you cannot get that done go the appointment yourself and the psychologists will advise you what to do next
good luck
Okay, love, let me talk to you about this, okay? Firstly, agoraphobia, per se, is highly debilitating. It’s not a trivial matter and most scientists believe that there is a close biochemical relationship between deficient levels of serotonin in major brain centers associated with Major Depression Disorder, Gen. Anx. Dis. and Panick disorder with/without Agoraphobia.
The good news is that there is very good treatment available these days for any of these entities. A Psychiatrist (a physician) can diagnose whether your boyfriend has agoraphobia, or has common associated conditions which can be treated with a high success rate with SSRI’s in combination with CBT, so I urge you to have him see a Psychiatrist so that his quality of life can improve.
