Technically, it is a psychiatric disorder. Psychiatrists are MDs and can prescribe medications. Psychologists and social workers do therapy with someone who is suffering from bipolar disorder. With your permission, your therapist & MD will talk periodically about how you are doing & if any changes in meds need to be made.
Social workers & psychologists work independently, are licensed by the state and can make diagnoses.
Good luck.
Psychiatrist usually treats bi-polar.. but i always get confused if they are the ones that can issue med’s.
Bipolar is concider a Mental illness or psycotic disorder. accually to be treat sucessully for bipolar the suggest a medical doctor(psychologist) who special in mental illness, and perscribe your proper meds to you. as well as a counceler(phycologist) councelers just listen and give you suggestions on how to cope in life with your disorder. They can Not perscribe medication. The medical doctor Psychologist can diganose you with a mental illnesses councelres can not. I have had bipolar since i was 12 years old and am now 35. I hope this imformation help out and you can rest assured it is accurate
Both. Psychiatrist will prescribe the meds as this is a biological disorder. A psychologist is a good tool as well because a person with bipolar disorder has a hard time dealing with the disorder and a psychologist can help them with life skills such as building self-esteem, helping reach realistic goals, and sorting out feelings about the disorder and how it relates to the people in the patients life. The more help to stay well the better.
