How to regain a sense of control recovering from an eating disorder?
As you probably know, a lot of about eating disorders is trying to have control in your life – or at least, it was that way with me. My therapist has told me I need to find something I can control (that doesn’t hurt me). Sounds good… but I’m just reaching blanks.
This is primarily a question for those who have recovered or are trying to recover from an eating disorder. Have you found any ways to have some control in your life? Something to do, preferably. Something tangible.

You can try doing something where you have a leadership role. The hardest thing to learn is that in reality there are few things we have control of in life. This goes to say don’t try to control things that are too big like safety, people, etc. Engage in activities or organizations where you have a set role or are responsible for organizing or overseeing something e.g. treasurer, vice president of a tennis club. Volunteering for organizations is a way to accomplish this too. Start little though and dont get yourself overwhelmed. Good luck. I know recovery is soooooooo incredibly hard, but keep your eye on the prize which is most important to you, your health and staying on this earth as long as possible
i am in the process of trying to recover from my eating disorder as well.
i’ve been told the exact same thing.
it’s all about a sense of control.
i’ve learned that i can control my own actions,
i can control whether or not i eat throughout the day.
i can also control whether or not i exercise.
Some other things you could try to focus on is:
Controlling who you let into your life.
Positive people or Negative poeple.
That can affect alot in your life.
Also, You can control what you do with your days & your life.
Find something that makes you happy or something that keeps your mind off of things.
Let go of controling other peoples actions or emotions.
That’s a major thing & something it takes time to learn.
