Your first answer is very correct, seratonin has a lot to do with how your brain funtions. However, there are other factors involved such as minerals and other chemicals. It also has to do with electrical impulses sent into the brain. That is why medications that are used to treat epilepsy now are being used to treat Bipolar disorder. (Medications like Lamictal [Lamotragine]). Newer drugs are also on the market that treat bipolar disorder without the side effects of other drugs, like Abilify and Zyprexa. Lithium is also used. Sometimes your doctor may proscribe traditional SSRIs (Select-Seratonin Reuptake Inhibiters) like Prozac or Zoloft. Another effective medication is Lithium. The side effects are usually mild.

Bipolar disease is caused by a chemical imbalance in the brain, seratonin is the culprit. There is a lack of seratonin in the brain and it makes you depressed most of the time and when you have a surge of seratonin it makes you act "manic" .
