How do you feel about NATO forces being posted in the West Bank?
The proposal is under current consideration by President-elect Obama but is meeting with a hostile Israeli response, since it would effectively end their 41-year military occupation. The Palestinian Authority views the proposal with understandable apprehension but is apparently keeping an open mind. What is your opinion? Would this facilitate Palestinian independence or is it simply a matter of relieving the IDF of international pressure to get out,but effectively changing nothing?

Inevitably one has mixed feelings, particularly given the U.S. role in splitting the Palestinian Authority by withholding funds from the P.A. until it severed it’s ties to the elected but Hamas-dominated government. Gen. Keith Dayton has supervisory authority over the P.A. security forces and is an ally of the loathsome Mohammad Dahlen, one of the Gang of Five that took over Fatah in the wake of Arafat’s strange demise. Nevertheless,Palestine – when it becomes a state – is likely to end up with a U.S.-backed puppet regime no matter what,so there is little disadvantage to a U.S. occupation and it will facilitate the formal establishment of the State of Palestine. If nothing else it will remove from the picture any further pretext for a continuing IDF presence in the West Bank. Since it is probably the only way to get the IDF out I give the proposal my support, not because I like it but because it is by far the lesser of two evils. That the Israelis dislike the plan is more than understandable since it irrevocably ends their de facto annexation of the West Bank and ends also any possibility of a future de jure annexation. Another point in it’s favor is that this will not be a unilateral U.S. occupation; it will be a multinational NATO force. Although no doubt it will be U.S.-dominated it must be acknowledged that the EU states have consistently exhibited a more compassionate attitude toward the Palestinians than the U.S. and this will certainly inhibit military misconduct toward the Pals. UN peace-keeping missions have lacked the authority to be effective, while NATO peace-keepers have proven themselves both fair and effective in post-war Yugoslavia.
Duane—great question.
Of COURSE Israel is hostile to the idea, as you say—their dirty little secrets, so well hidden in the United States (Israel’s benefactor) by the Zionist-controlled U.S. media—might get out.
I personally would prefer to see UN peacekeeping forces (though this idea has also been unilaterally rejected by Israel, not surprisingly.) I wouldn’t wish on them, though, the fate of those Irish UN peacekeepers massacred by Israeli forces during Israel’s seige of Lebanon.
I think we will find that they will be posted there for Israel’s (& US) benefit in reality and they won’t have to shoot too many stone throwing Palestinians before that message gets around.
Expect dangerous change w. American generals and young lawyers running the show and only read the bits between the lines.
My real gut feel is that it’s a horrible idea.
On the other hand, if it truly means Israel retreats to the 1967 borders and Palestinians have full control in all aspects, just not an army, that’s not so bad compared to Israel’s army and settlers staying. However, another condition should be that NATO not use it as a base to attack other countries, that it can only detain people if they’re actually engaging in violence, and that it doesn’t mean the refugees give up on the right of return.
feeling …. why feeling … if you ask opInion yes i can answer NO to nato but yes and welcome to UN PEICE AND SECURITY FORCE
Let’s hope that the NATO forces will "force" our Jew friends here to behave a little bit more democratically and "relieve" them of their burden as well! (pun intended).
Such an action from the NATO side will be beneficial to the Jews as well.
You see, this will force them to commit a smaller number of war crimes against the unfortunate native Palestinians, a thing that will prove beneficial to all of them in the end.
I have high hopes for Mr. Obama and he seems to be heading towards the right direction.
Greetings
NATO forces in West bank? Wow, clearly America believes it needs to look after Hamas. This only means that something serious is going on in the west bank.
I feel great.
No more innocent Palestinian kid deaths and all.
Maybe that’s the first step near peace and ceasefire. Thomas
I hope the NATO will make sure that the Palestinians form a good Army so they can fight back the jews and claim all of their land back very fair.
I am sure the Mr. Putin will sell them some guns so they can defend themselves from the jews.
bye bye
NATO should be there,it is better than the UN.
Ummm, I dun like the Idea so much..
and please, be fair people..
why not spread NATO forces in Israel, since it has got 1000x more force than the palestinians has.. so actually they represent a 1000x more thread on the near countries (which is already happening, you see Israelis think noone is stronger than them, and so they do conflicts with Lebanon, Syria, Iran, I wonder whose next, and sure before all of them: West Bank & Gaza.
If NATO forces are to be spread, then 3 things must happen:
1- there should still be weapons with palestinians, because we don`t trust Israel, and we all have seen how did Israel break the Hudna vulgarly.
2- NATO forces should also be spread and take the job that IDF soldiers do, so Israel won`t represent a thread on other countries.
3- NATO forces should be able to stop the attacks on arabs and muslims that live inside whats so called "Israel".
PS: those f*ckers in West Bank haven`t been elected to represent the palestinians, but you know… America can "make democracy" or "create democracy" according to their measures…
those who are letting NATO forces to exist in West Bank, for nothing back (nothing similar on the opposite side) are just set to lead the Palestinians by the American Government…
The Real Government Is The Government That Was Elected In 2006, And Got Most Of The Votes (more than 75%)..
But They Don`t Have Any Commands Right Now. They Can`t Stop This… Because They Want Such A Government To "Give" (Give Israelis for sure), and NOT "Take" (Take Some Of Palestinians Rights Back)
Its complicated… specially for foreigners… so I expect many thumb downs . .. but I hope u just get it…. Think of it twice.

"I have high hopes for Mr. Obama and he seems to be headed towards the right direction.

Oh, no, please understand that this is where "dirty playing" begins…
Obama is not playing like Bush…
Bush was visible Ghost
Obama is the invisible one..
Obama will bring some peace. I`m sure of it. but that is because its a requirement for dirty playing..
and the NATO Forces idea is one of these "really really really Dirty…" ideas
I don’t think it is a bad idea actually. Israel is going to have to withdraw from the West Bank at some point and NATO forces could prevent it from turning into another Gaza. From what I read Israel is apprehensive as well but I am sure a strong US presence will alleviate any security concerns. NATO is a much better choice than the UN…since the UN essentially let Hezbollah rearm with more rockets than they had in 2006 and was complacent in the kidnapping of Israeli soldiers. However, many NATO countries are sympathetic to the Palestinians so this is essentially the best option; a compromise for both sides.
Everyone is aware that Russia is not a member of NATO…that NATO was formed to counter Russia…and the Russia opposes any of its former member states like the Ukraine and Georgia from gaining membership? Because of this, it would be highly unlikely that a NATO peacekeeping force would be allowing Russia to re-arm the Palestinians.
Far from ideal but a vast improvement over the status quo. The scene now is like something out of "Lord of the Flies" with Jack and his gang as the Israelis. These people do anything they want. No Palestinian is going to be happy to see one occupation force replacing another when they crave their freedom and dignity but until their day of independence arrives they will be vastly safer under NATO protection than being the playthings of a screeching pack of demented bloodthirsty zionists. These sadistic thugs need to be removed and their displacement by NATO troops is probably the only way to get rid of them.
