first, go to medical school, graduate, do an internship, do a residency, and then you can practice medicine. until then, don't try to diagnose anything.

Sure, he has the genetic loading for a mood disorder however he is young and kids tend to become obnoxious when they hit 12. He is way too young to tell if he has Bipolar, acting out from stress if there are issues around the reason his father is a sole parent is more likely. Being single parent it is very difficult and worrying him with a kind but uninformed idea like that is not going to help. Be there for your friend, if his son is not sleeping make sure he is getting to bed at the right time with no TV or other distractions.

He probably already knows. To be honest i wouldn't discuss it with either of them unless he asks you. Bi polar depression is something that is actually really hard to diagnose and a lot of the characteristics are similar with many types of mental illness. If your friend is already depressed he could take your suggestion the wrong way and think you are questioning his parenting. My brother is bi polar but if someone had told my mom and dad that when he was 12 it just would have upset them. Just be there for him when he needs to talk. You seem like a really caring friend and it sounds like he needs a person like you
