How do I tell someone I think their son is bipolar?
My friend is a single father who is clinically depressed. His mother was bipolar. His son seems to be bipolar. The kid just entered puberty (he’s 12) and that’s usually when manic depression starts to appear. He can’t sleep at night, he’s always hyper and the odd time he becomes kind of down.. Should I talk to him or the kid about this?

He probably already knows. To be honest i wouldn’t discuss it with either of them unless he asks you. Bi polar depression is something that is actually really hard to diagnose and a lot of the characteristics are similar with many types of mental illness. If your friend is already depressed he could take your suggestion the wrong way and think you are questioning his parenting. My brother is bi polar but if someone had told my mom and dad that when he was 12 it just would have upset them. Just be there for him when he needs to talk. You seem like a really caring friend and it sounds like he needs a person like you
Doesn’t seem like he is bipolar but rather a regular kid with too much time on his hands. Is he enrolled in any sports or activities to get rid of pent up energy.
Just seems like the kid is bored and needs to do something, and if hes just sitting around all day it will drive him crazy and make him kind of down.
Sounds like the kids just bored, and has too much energy
Wait.
The child just turned 12, it’s too early to tell. He is more likely ADD if anything.
Psychiatrists really hesitate diagnosing bipolar, BPD, schizophrenia, DID and the other more serious disorders until a child is 18 and has a history of serious behavioral, family, school and social problems.
first, go to medical school, graduate, do an internship, do a residency, and then you can practice medicine. until then, don’t try to diagnose anything.
well u should talk to his father about it
he is not too young
i was diagnosed at 14
i had the same symptoms. i didnt sleep for days. i talked very fast and i sometimes didnt come home for days
take him to a psychatrist before things get worse
Sure, he has the genetic loading for a mood disorder however he is young and kids tend to become obnoxious when they hit 12. He is way too young to tell if he has Bipolar, acting out from stress if there are issues around the reason his father is a sole parent is more likely. Being single parent it is very difficult and worrying him with a kind but uninformed idea like that is not going to help. Be there for your friend, if his son is not sleeping make sure he is getting to bed at the right time with no TV or other distractions.
Im bipolar and your wrong . When were depressed where far from hyper , were more like sleep and have no social interactions for days or weeks .
He’s just a bored kid .
