How can I calm my anxiety problems at night time?
At night time I have severe anxiety and paranoia problems. I continually convince myself that I can hear noises downstairs and I scare myself into believing that someone is trying to/has broken into my home. As a result of this I am up and down the stairs double checking locks etc, and this goes on for hours. I’m hardly sleeping and its really taking its toll. Does anyone have any advice on how to overcome this problem?

I have the same problem, PLUS Chronic Insomnia. Try to avoid eating any dairy products. The only time you should eat dairy products is in the morning. Dairy increases your mental and physical state. But I learned to overcome my anxiety and every once in a while I still have insomnia.
1.) Get into a comfortable position. (I sleep on my right side.)
2.) Clear your mind. This is important and you need to stay focused.
3.) relax your body. Head to toe. Let the stress of the day just flow out of you.
4.) (This is completely up to you.) But think about the time that you felt at peace. It will most likely calm your inner fears.
Then Voila. Hope this helps.
Medication for OCD might help.
You really should see a psychologist, especially if it is cutting into your sleep. I have anxiety issues and often could sleep cuz my mind was racing. I went to a psychologist and she told me when I can’t sleep to picture a mouse running on a wheel. Then make the mouse slow down to a walk in your mind. Then make the mouse stop walking, get off the wheel and go to sleep. Sometimes it took me a while to get the mouse to quit running but by the time I got the mouse to sleep in my head I was dozing off too. I know it sounds weird but it helps take your mind off of your anxiety. Hope this helps….
The same way you convince yourself that you can hear noises, you should try to convince yourself that nothing is going to happen and it’s your anxiety acting up on you. Try drinking Tilo Tea – it is known to calm your nerves and can help you go to sleep.
If you haven’t seen a doctor about this yet, I would go soon. The repetitous checking of the locks could be OCD but it’s a result of the "paranoia" which could be a form of very mild psychosis. Also, if you feel this way every night and are not sleeping soundly for at least 6-8 hours, you could be sleep deprived which can cause paranoia that can lead to other psych disorders. I take Seroquel every night and every now and then miss a dose. When that happens, I feel the same way you do about paranoia – break-ins, feeling scared, etc. I’m sure a doctor (preferably psychiatrists due to fear) could prescribe something for you to relieve your nightime anxiety. Good luck and God Bless
