Not in the US. If you say no, then no means no. The only exception is if you are a danger to yourself or others. This is a major rule in medicine. You do have to be of a certain age though. For example a 9 year old wouldn’t be able to do it, but a 15 year old could. Many states have rules about what age it is. The reason for this confidentiality rule is to protect you from any kind of reprisal from your parents, or family.
This is just a general example:
Jenny is a healthy 15 year old girl who came in for counseling about her eating disorder. After evaluation, Jenny aluded to a possible sexual trauma at the hands of one of her parents. Jenny requested that her parents not be informed.
The only contact the therapist may make is to law enforcement for the abuse. No mention may be made to the parents regarding the content of the session.
And no, it doesn’t matter who is paying for the session. Confidential means just that. The only time information may cross is in the case of family therapy. Even then, the rules are rather tricky. Doctors actually take whole courses dedicated to medical ethics.
I hope this was helpful.
Therapists and psychologists can tell your parents anything they want if you are under 18, as long as it threatens your well being.
yes they are if you are under the age of 18 but they only do it to help you. there is confidentiality rights but if you have a problem you need help.
I believe they can. Hopefully you are in a safe situation so that you can get the help you need.
Yes. Until you turn 18 that ‘s the way it is.
You do have patient confidentiality, but if you have a problem which requires additional treatment (rehab programs or something similar), they do have to inform your parents because they need their consent to do treatment.
But having to inform your parents isn’t a good reason to continue suffering without help. Your parents will probably want you to get better, too.
They do not give any family planning information out, so i would check on the NHS website. The rules are they can give a 16 year old the pill, or even under if they feel she is responsible enough, also patient confidentiality
The only exception for the break in confidentiality is if it was risking your life or you were in danger of being in a life threatening situation, otherwise they would not dare
No, there is a patient confidentiality. Unless you are a harm to yourself/others then your therapist cannot disclose anything you discuss in a session. So your eating disorder would be "safe". However, if at any point your ED become serious and risks your life then your therapist would have to break confidentiality.
