bipolar ??
BF is nice one minute and mean the next. Sometimes is defensive, and I can ask the same question on a Mon get a "normal" answer and on Thursday he flies off the handle. He does smoke pot. Is it the pot, bipolar or just him

It could be the pot. Pot makes my sister happy and she is unhappy when she doesnt have any in her system. He could also be bipolar, maybe even the reason he smokes pot.
If he goes into deep depression for a while and then can be exstatically happy for a while, he may be bipolar. There are questionaires you can probably find online. Have him take one.
Could be either or something else. Not really enough information to know. Bipolar is normally when the person can be manic (full on happy and grand ideas etc) and then other times depressed. Real swings in those feelings. Nice one minute and mean the next does not sound Bipolar. Smoking pot does not help with mental health though. It has been researched and studies have found that it can cause mental health problems like schizophrenia and depression.
Maybe just be a friend, listen to what he is going through and try not to judge. Listening can be really valuable.

I would imagine it is the pot – though this is strictly a guess.
There is a book by Danielle Steel that she wrote about her son that is called Nick or Nicky or something along those lines. It goes into great detail about her son and what he went though being bipolar. Look her name up on the web and the name of the book will probably be on her web site.

Another place to look is called the DSM IV. It is what the psychologists and psychiatrists use to diagnose a person. That will give you a much better and detailed clinical description.

I do have friends that smoke pot on a regular basis. When they didn’t get their normal dose everyday they became the most pissed off people I knew.
Bipolar on the other hand is periods of elevated mood, or mania, alternating with periods of depression. Someone with bipolar cycles between these, often with periods of normal mood in between. The pattern of symptoms differs from person.
Mania: invincible feelings like nothing can happen to you, feeling “high”, extreme irritability, sleeping a few hours per day, more talkative, racing thoughts, distracted, extremely energetic, risky behavior (in sex, drugs, alcohol, gambling, or spending sprees) and impaired judgment.
Depression: helpless, hopeless, loss of interest in dailly activities, appetite/weight changes, insomnia or oversleeping, loss of energy, self-loathing, trouble focusing, irritability.
Here is my take on the whole situation. When it comes right down to it, everyone in the world would be diagnosed with bipolar disorder if the docter caught them in the right (or wrong) period of their life. I am bipolar, the up comes from convincing yourself that your life is okay; your going to be okay, your friends appreciate you and you feel as if you are a normal person. The down comes from realizing that you are different from other people, maybe too different; that you are somehow "off" or can’t think correctly and time maybe running out on feeling normal. Marijuana causes a schism in your mind, or at least in mine. It separates your mind into a "you" there in the room with everybody else and a "you" constantly critiqing everything you do or think. This is to complicated to answer here, but my advice is to be patient with him, allow him alone time and advise him to quit smoking for at least a month to see if it helps.
A good therapist might give you the best answer. He may have had a hard childhood and learned odd ways to express himself. Sounds like he deals with personal insecurity to me.
Pot effects people differently, he may be an irritable smoker instead of the happy go lucky one. Or it might enhance whatever mood he is in originally, good or bad or in between there somewhere. You might ask him what he uses it for, how it helps him.
Bipolar disorder has many classifications and people diagnosed have different ranges of mood swings and different triggers that cause them an episode. Classically the bipolar 1 disordered person experiences noticeably depressed down and out and even suicidal depression that is quite visible to most people, to very speedy can’t sit still or sleep, and at its extreme loses their original personality all together and is obviously psychotically high. And I’m talking They are in a different world, hallucinating, with a different ego or no ego, transformed and flying higher then somebody on a high dose of LSD. But there are milder forms they still classify as bipolar. Are you sure he isn’t using any other drugs?
