Are there any herbal remedies that work for bipolar disorder?
I know that there are some that are recommended for depression – St. John’s Wort, for example – but do these remedies run the same risk as antidepressants for people with bipolar – that is, do they make them manic? (Please bear in mind that I have already had that reaction to an antidepressant, so I might be susceptible to it).
Are there any herbal remedies that are safe and recommended for people with bipolar disorder?

I don’t believe in taking medication. That’s a personal decision. They tried to put me on medication that was originally made for people with seizures. I don’t have seizures. I am bipolar. I told them that they could shove it because I wasn’t going to take the medication. And I didn’t, and I am still not taking anything for it. I like to be able to feel, I don’t want to be a zombie. Sex seems to help. Lol, I’m not just saying that, it’s true. (Your brain releases endorphins during orgasm that makes you happy.) Other stuff does that too, like chocolate, and exercise. Try some of those options. Even if you take the medication.
No not really, studies have suggested that SAM-e can help with mild thing such as Seasonal Affective Disorder but with a complex disorder such as that I would recommend sticking to the regimen your doctor gives you. P.S- St Johns wort is actually milder than what they say SAM-e is you can see it reflected in the price too.
no i dont think so
I doubt it and I would like to say…
I know a woman who is into holistic medicine. She convinced another woman with severe bipolar disorder to get off her meds and get onto a lifestyle/herbal medicine. The bipolar woman, after about a week, had a severe episode, nearly destroyed herself and her life.
I’m a believer in certain techniques which aid in the recovery/management of mental disorders. But some disorders are really too severe to play games with. Consult a doctor.
I am borderline Bipolar and am on antidepressants for the lows, the highs aren’t so bad, if they were I would need Lithium to balance out the mood swings. Bipolar Disorder needs something to balance out the highs/lows and I don’t think there is anything natural that can do that. St John’s Wort certainly helps depression, as this is milder than synthetic anti-depressants this may be more subtle. 5HTP is another natural anti-depressant. See a herbalist at, for example, Neal’s Yard and get their advice.
Good luck

first the caviots: if you know you have bipolar work with a doctor. if you think you have bipolar work with a doctor. If you haven’t been up 4 days rambling incoherently, ending up in a psyc ward at the hospital a diagnosis may not be simple for a doctor (psychiatrist ) you can keep a journal of your mood and some basic things including how much you sleep, what you eat, exercise and when you take any drugs( prescription or otherwise) or alcohol. When you record your mood try to use a standardized way. Young’s mood scale or the Berkeley bipolar group scale are a good place to start.
the only natural substance that I have seen any studies for is omega 3 fatty acids, fish oil.
I have only been researching bipolar for the last month since a friend needed to be taken on a 5150.
Of all the people on the web who claim to have bipolar: the ones that seem to be the most lucid are the ones who have a support network and take responsibility for there condition..
For a good herbal mood stabilizer I recommend lecithin. I take it with my antidepressants and they work well with each other, other wise I go into a mixed state which is hell. for depression would recommend tyrosine, and taurine, which both can be gotten at gnc. gaba for insomnia, I still go my cycles but not as long or bad.I found the lecithin worked well as a mood stabilizer, I keep some on hand so when i go manic I take more on that day like every two hours, and works for me.I stopped using the herbs for depression cause the antidepressants just worked better for me, but my mood stabilized sucked so I stick with lecithin.
